The History of Gundagai

In 1824 the overland explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell first opened up a trail for land seekers and pioneers.

The Five Mile Creek was a popular camping spot for the teamsters and their lumbering supply-laden bullock wagons. Today it's the site of the famous Austrailian icon "The Dog on the Tuckerbox", along with "Snake Gully" and the four legendary characters Dad, Dave, Mum and Mabel.

The greatest natural disaster in Australia's history occured at Gundagai in 1852 when the Murrumbidgee River swept away the whole of the original township that had asisen on the flood plains. Some 83 people perished beneath the murky waters.

The town was rebuilt but away from the flood plains on the side of the hills. This is the town you will see today.
